Whether nostalgically in front of the town hall or frivolously at the Spielbudenplatz in St. Pauli: During the Advent season, Hamburg will also offer a wide selection of colorful and atmospheric Christmas markets in 2024. An overview.

In many places in the Hanseatic city, the Christmas markets invite you to get into the festive spirit and look for beautiful gifts even before the first Advent. While the larger markets in the city center can get quite crowded, especially in the evenings and on weekends, strolling through the smaller markets in the neighborhoods is often more tranquil.

A Viennese café in the Art Nouveau style, a carousel from the 1920s, and a toy alley where a large model railway runs at the height of the market stalls are some of the special features of the historic Christmas market of Roncalli in the Rathausplatz. With its nostalgic flair, it is particularly atmospheric. On offer: numerous delicacies, gift items, and handicrafts, including those from the Ore Mountains and Tyrol. At some stalls, visitors can watch how the products are made. Three times a day (at 4 PM, 6 PM, and 8 PM), Santa Claus glides over the market in his sleigh and tells the story of his reindeer Rudolf.

"White Magic" at Jungfernstieg

Simple white pagoda tents, beautifully illuminated and crowned with white stars: The Christmas market at Jungfernstieg deliberately sets a contrast to the usual rustic Christmas stalls. Around 80 vendors offer culinary delights, handicrafts, toys, and decorative items. A special feature is the historic Ferris wheel from 1926.

Again this year, the fairy tale ships are back with their children's program featuring theater, a fairy tale storyteller, face painting, and a reading and play corner. On two baking ships, children aged four and up can bake cookies (admission ticket required, available on November 16, 9 AM - 2 PM at the Europa-Passage or as long as supplies last directly at the dock in the office of the fairy tale ships, price: 3 euros).

The organizer claims that the "hottest Christmas market" in Hamburg opens annually at the Spielbudenplatz on the Reeperbahn. At the decorated stalls in the Ü-18 Christmas market, there are erotic gift ideas, and in the mulled wine pharmacy, you can mix your own mulled wine. Each Monday, pink glittering unicorn mulled wine is served there. Christmas Market at Michel

Since 1922, there has been a Christmas market in Hamburg's most famous church, the Michel. Numerous booths and stalls in the community center, in the crypt, and in the church square are part of the offering. Children are invited to create Christmas crafts, and the program includes communal Advent singing, devotions, and a concert by the brass choir. New this year are stick bread baking at fire pits and a children's carousel.

Just a few steps from the Michel, the four seamen's churches of Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden line up in Dietmar-Koel-Straße. Traditionally, the popular Scandinavian Christmas markets take place there in November. In a typical Nordic Christmas atmosphere, visitors can enjoy culinary specialties from the North and purchase Scandinavian handicrafts, textiles, Advent decorations, and much more at the stalls.
