He served as the chairman of Social Democrats for Faith and Solidarity [3] (formerly the Swedish Christian Social Democrats Association - Brotherhood Movement) from 2015 to 2020, and was also an adjunct member of the Swedish Social Democratic Party's executive committee. [4]
Biography
Bjereld graduated in journalism in Gothenburg 1978. He was a member of the Communist Party Marxist-Leninists (the Revolutionaries) (KPML(r)) for a few years, but returned to social democracy in the mid-1980s.[5] He combined journalistic work at, among others, Göteborgs-Tidningen (GT) with other jobs, including in healthcare (Kallebäcks nursing home). The experiences there resulted in the novel Anna, Department 13 (1981). He defended his doctoral thesis in 1989 on Swedish Middle East policy, followed by several books on Swedish foreign policy.
Research
As a researcher, Bjereld has focused on Swedish foreign and security policy, including Sweden's role in the Israel-Palestine conflict, gender and politics, political opinion formation, as well as globalization issues. He has been the principal investigator for the interdisciplinary research programs Sweden during the Cold War[7] and Surveillance Sweden.[8] He is part of the management group for the ongoing research program Power, Identity, Modernity (MIM program) with political scientists, sociologists, and media researchers from the various Scandinavian countries.[9] He has published in international journals such as International Studies Quarterly, Journal of Peace Research, Gender & Society, Scandinavian Political Studies, and International Review of Sociology.
Authorship
Together with his wife Marie Demker, Bjereld has published a trilogy on how the rapid development of communication technology affects politics and society: In the Age of Aquarius? A book about the authority uprising of 1968 and its significance today (2005), The Battle for Knowledge. The political fault lines of the information society (2008), and The Necessary Politics. Power and resistance in an individualized era (2011).
He has published a number of books on Swedish foreign policy and societal development after World War II, on the relationship between politics and Christian faith, and the Israel-Palestine conflict.
Andra engagemang
Bjereld has been chairman of the Swedish Association of Political Science, board member of the Nordic Political Science Association (NOPSA), member of the International Political Science Association's (IPSA) Council, and member of the Steering Committee for the European collaborative organization for international political studies European Consortium for Political Research's Standing Group on International Relations.[[11\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ulf_Bjereld#cite_note-11) He is a member of the Foreign Policy Society[[12\]] and has been a member of the Swedish Institute of International Affairs security policy council. Bjereld was also associated as an expert with the Security Service Commission.
Besides his role as a researcher and his political and church engagement, Bjereld is a frequently sought-after commentator on radio, TV, as well as in daily and trade press. He also regularly contributes to IFK Göteborg's award-winning supporter blog Bara Ben på Glenn Hysén and the news blog Ajour.
